HISTORY
The history of the E.J. Hayes School building can be traced to the year 1924. It was in that year when Mr. Edgar J. Hayes was hired as the principal of the Williamston Colored School and given the task of starting a high school department. The high school department was actually begun in 1925.
In 1934, the high school became standard by meeting the requirements of the State Board of Education. In 1952, the Williamston Colored School was renamed the E.J. Hayes School in honor of Professor Edgar J. Hayes who retired after serving as principal of the Williamston Colored School.
Mr. William A. Holmes succeeded Professor Hayes. Aided by a capable and cooperative faculty during the seventeen years of his administration, Mr. Holmes exemplified sensitivity for the needs of the school and worked through resolution of many social and civil rights issues of the 1960s.
The old E.J. Hayes High School building was officially leased from the Martin County Board of Education by the E.J. Hayes Alumni Association. The E.J. Hayes Alumni Association (EJHAA) is a 501 c3 organization.
